With the number of youthful offenders increasing at an alarming rate, as District Attorney, I decided to look at alternative ways to educate and empower the youth of today -- a way to change the direction of youth -- a way of rewarding youth through positive reinforcement.   Thus the creation and implementation of the International Drug Free Youth program, commonly known as IDFY (pronounced I-defy)

IDFY promotes a drug-free lifestyle for middle and high school students in our parish by offering discounts at local businesses to its members for for their commitment to remain drug-free.  The program is jointly sponsored by the Calcasieu Parish District Attorney's Office and The Pathology Lab, and is the only program of its kind in the state of Louisiana.  To date, there are over 5,000 middle and high school students in Calcasieu Parish enrolled in IDFY, with over 200 local businesses participating as merchant sponsors.

International Drug Free Youth is a program offered to middle and high school students. To join, students agree to adopt a drug-free lifestyle and prove it by taking a voluntary zero tolerance drug test. To ensure a drug-free membership, students are selected at random for re-testing.

IDFY members receive a T-shirt and photo identification card that entitles them to special benefits such as discounts at local restaurants, retail stores, entertainment centers and special events. This program is sponsored by the Calcasieu Parish District Attorney John DeRosier and The Pathology Lab.
